It's been a cold and wet week in Canberra, brrrr! Today we woke up to snow in the mountains around us, reminding us that winter is still here. There are some lovely photos here in this article, but many more online, I saw some lovely photography this morning when looking over the news and FB updates. It will be a very cold night tonight too, going down to minus 3, but then the week will warm up thankfully.
Winter does not actually end on the 1st September, it ends on the equinox (Vernal/Autumnal equinox) which is on the 23rd September AEST this year. There is a reason we have an equinox for summer and winter to mark the division of the four seasons. The summer equinox usually falls between 22-23 September and the winter Equinox falls between 20-22 March annually in the Southern hemisphere and reverse in the Northern hemisphere. It has always been that way and not just picking the first day of the month, it is a precise astronomical calculation that is thousands of years old.
