Time to plant Roses

It’s that time of year again to plant roses, and I am champing at the bit to plant roses. I just ordered another rose, Madame Anisette which is a highly fragrant rose and grows to 1.8m high, repeat flowering and disease resistant. It’s part of the Kordes Parfuma range, and flowers from spring to autumn. So you get plenty bang for your buck with constant colour and less spraying for bugs.

I ordered mine through garden express in Victoria and it should arrive in a week or two. This is the time to shop for roses and get them in the ground. They look delightful among daisies and lavender for easy care. Sadly this year there are a few that are temporarily unavailable and many that I want are on that list.

These days when people are time poor but want a flower garden the disease resistant long flowering roses are ideal for mass planting. They don’t let you down, as they are a riot of colour in continuous bloom.

I would love to create a rose walk but I have already committed to making sections of different varieties in my garden. So that plan is out the window, and I have to come up with something that is easy to create without any difficulty. But I still have room to squeeze more roses in, driving my husband nuts. Not that he is a gardener, that’s my job. 😂 Nobody messes with my garden, I love my flowers and old world romantic gardens.

Find your colour theme and go with it, and let your imagination run wild, with depth, texture and grouping. One word of advice though is, make sure your young plants are protected from wildlife. I just lost a new apple blossom carpet rose to that pesky rabbit that visits my garden.  I went out to collect seeds from my cosmos flowers yesterday, and looked at the spot where I had planted the carpet rose. It took me a few seconds to realise it was gone. That bunny had eaten it right down to the ground. So guess who is going to get evicted?

I did love him visiting the garden but, eating my rose crossed the line, lol. So I will block where he came in from asap. Lo and behold today I also discovered the bunny had bitten through my Wonga vine. That was the second one that we had planted. The frost killed the first one because it was planted too soon, but the new one was definitely doing well until the pest decided to bite it. Resulting in one empty and boring metal screen in dire need of foliage. Oh, well, roll on spring time with any luck my sweet peas will grow up the screen without little teeth chopping on them.

It’s like the curse of the were rabbit trying to stop mr bunny feasting on my plants. A handy gardening tip is plant flowers that are pest  deterrent such as marigolds, lavender, daffodils, foxglove, snapdragons and alliums. Good to know when you want to keep the bunnies away. Small developing plants need a wire cage to keep out predators until the plant reaches a satisfactory size. So; as soon as I get my new rose and a replacement carpet rose I will put a cage around them.

Happy gardening everyone; may your garden be an abundance of peace, joy and serenity to you
