Australian houses are definitely not up to standards of European, British or US and Canadian standards. They are single brick buildings with poor or no insulation. But the buck stops with the government allowing cowboys to control the industry going way back to early 20th century. It’s not just Canberra that has poor building standards it’s national and always has been the case.
Read the comments too because you will see that people that have lived outside of Australia are better informed on what is acceptable housing standards and what is abysmal housing standards.
The world standard is a house must be at least 18 degrees centigrade inside to meet human standards. Australia fails the pub test on that.
The supposed ideal temperature for your home in winter in Canberra is 18 to 21 degrees. But bear in mind if your thermostat is 20 degrees upwards then you are chewing through the power and your bills will be high. Insulation, closing curtains and doors helps keep the heat in. Buy thermal lined curtains that keep the cold out in winter and the heat out in summer. People with ducted gas heating no longer use it because it’s so expensive thanks to the climate change propaganda and the cost of gas’s heating has skyrocketed in the past few years. That is a political driven policy there is no other reason for this apart from greed.
