This is something that I didn’t know, I grow Blue Cornflowers or Centaurea cyanus every year, as I was fascinated by them in my gran’s garden as a child. It’s such a striking flower and so simple at the same time. Blue cornflowers are also used with Bergamot in Lady Grey tea and in some brands of French Earl Grey tea. I had no idea that it had medicinal properties until just now. So I am sharing this for anyone that is interested but notice there are warnings about allergies in this article.
I usually grow this and Love- in-a-mist, aka Nigella sativa every season along with cosmos and other daisy like flowers. They make a wonderful display over the summer season and then you can save the seeds for next season. Keep them in individual envelopes and mark them with planting instructions and season.
Nigella is similar to cornflour but the seed pod is like a papery ball with black seeds inside that can be used in cooking and medicine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigella
Nigella is in bloom now if you live in Australia but Cornflowers are planted in spring after the frost is over. Happy gardening and I hope you do try growing these pretty flowers they make a lovely indoor flower too.
